Dog Breeds in the Hound Group

The dog breeds in the Hound group are quite diverse. Most of these animals share a common inherited trait, they excellent hunters. They use their acute sense for smelling which enables them to follow trails handily. One of their more unique traits, one you need to enjoy, is the sound they make called baying. If you have not experienced this sound it best if you listen to a sample before taking one of these hounds home.

Beagle

Being sweet, gentle and curious makes the Beagle a dog that everyone enjoys. This breed is calm, intelligent, and very sociable. They are as a rule good with other dogs and make a good pet for kids. Even though they are lovable and sweet, the Beagle does have a mind of its own, so you will need to patient and firm while training them. Hunters by nature, be sure to keep these little guys in a fenced in yard, or on a leash, as they love to take off on an exploration.

Basset Hound

Like most of the breeds in the Hound group the Basset Hound is gentle, and naturally well-behaved. Housebreaking this breed can be difficult but with some TLC they will do well. Their keen senses make it hard for them to pay attention for extended periods of time, because they would rather be out exploring. With this in mind they can be a little stubborn. They love their humans and especially children.

Foxhound

The American Foxhound will take off to parts unknown if you let them. They do not make good indoor house pets, they want to be outdoors hunting with other Foxhounds, they love being a pack. For this reason they should not be trusted alone with cats. They are gentle, loving, and are very protective of children, They love to bay, so get ready for some barking melodies.

Dachshund

As an owner of a Dachshund you will need to be very clever, this breed is willful and mischievous. Instead of you training them, they like to attempt to train you. They are an outgoing family pet. The Dachshund likes bark alot, and very loudly. They will consistently make holes in your yard as they are compulsive diggers. They get along well with other pets, however their jealous nature will cause them to bite.

Greyhound

Reserved, sensitive, and loyal best describes the Greyhound. They can be vary timid, so it is wise to socialize this breed at a very early age. They are generally good with kids, but do not like rough play. This peace loving dog likes to lounge about and doesn't bark too much. They run extremely fast, and with their natural hunting sense, they are not good with other small animals, especially cats.
